Travel Information on the Britrail System
britrail pass

The Britrail system is specifically designed for overseas visitors to Britain and those touring Britain by rail; the system offers a range of rail travel options including point-to-point tickets (similar to how us Brits would book our rail travel) alongside a number of heavily discounted multi-day passes which are not available to British citizens. As official Britrail agents, adeo Travel can offer the full range of tickets, passes and services within the Britrail system.

Point-to-point tickets

Ideal if you are just making one or two key rail journeys in Britain during your vacation, it will invariably be more cost effective to book a point-to-point ticket. Using the Britrail system you can simply book either one-way or return tickets between any two specified destinations on the national rail network. Unless otherwise stated the tickets are valid at any time and on any service between the destinations and there is no need to specify an exact date and/or time of travel offering the utmost in flexibility of travel. And with your adeo Travel Britain Travel expert on hand to advise we can provide all you need to know in terms of destination stations, departure times and journey durations, it couldn't be easier to plan your travel. If you are doing more than one or two point-to-point journeys over the course of your trip it may well be more cost-effective to purchase a rail pass; ask your adeo Travel Britain Expert and they will check costing for you and will be sure to provide you with the best value option for your specific rail itinerary.

Britrail Passes

Britrail Passes simply offer the best value and most flexible means of rail travel in the UK. The range of passes have been specifically designed for the overseas visitor to Britain and are not available to British citizens. Passes must be purchased in advance of travel and cannot be bought here in the UK so it is essential to pre-book when planning your vacation. Each pass is fully flexible offering unlimited access to the national rail network, valid on any rail service operated by any rail provider/operator; passengers can simply hop-on and hop off of services and cover long journeys without the need for separate tickets. This level of flexibility and few limitations on where you can travel means that the passes provide unbeatable value and passengers can achieve massive savings compared with purchasing separate tickets on the day for each and every journey.

  • Consecutive Passes - These are valid for the set number of consecutive days from the time of first use or validation. So if you validate a three day pass on a Monday you can use it as many times as you like on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday it becomes invalid even if you have used it only once.
  • Flexi-Passes - These offer you a set number of days of travel which can be used over a fixed period of time (usually a period of 2 months from the first time of use), you can use the rail system as much as you like on each day of travel. For Example, if you have a 4 day flexi-pass you may validate it on a Monday, use it again on the Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. You can of course use some days consecutively if you choose but once you have used it on four separate days of travel your pass is then "used up". This type of pass is excellent if you know you will be basing yourself in certain towns/cities for a number of days at a time and will only be using the pass for the major journeys between these destinations.

Most passes can be purchased for travel in standard class or an upgrade to first class travel, for more information on the benefits of upgrade please click here.

There are a range of special offers and discounts that come with purchasing Britrail Passes. These include:

  • Low season discounts for those travelling in January, February, November or December.
  • Included travel on airport express rail links.
  • Discounts for British citizens when travelling with an overseas companion.
  • Family passes available including free and discounted passes for children aged 5-15yrs.
  • Group discount available for parties of 4 or more passengers.
  • Britrail youth discounts available for passengers aged 16-25yrs.
  • Senior discounts (for those aged 60yrs or over) are available on first class passes only.

Please ask your adeo Travel Britain Expert if think any of these discounts apply to your customized itinerary and quotation.

The Britrail System and Passes

Where and when the passes can be used?

Travelling with Britrail passes you are free to hop on and hop off of trains at any time and on any service on each valid day of your pass. There is therefore no need to pre-book seat reservations or book on to specific departure times offering the utmost in flexibility.

Some passes also carry regional restrictions. For example, the Freedom of Scotland Pass is valid only within Scotland (not England or Wales). Britrail England passes are valid only in England (not in Scotland or Wales) and the London Plus Pass is valid within a set area around London. For full details of where your specific pass is valid please refer to the Britrail area map.

Britrail passes cannot be used on a city's subway system (such as the London Underground or the Glasgow Subway) as these are operated locally and are not considered part of the national rail network. Britrail pass are however valid on the Heathrow Express and Gatwick Express rail links (though this will count as part of one of your days of use).

Price and value of Britrail Passes

Whichever type of pass you choose, as long as you are making a number of journeys, you are sure to benefit from excellent value travel compared with purchasing point-to-point tickets on the relevant day at the station. When putting together your bespoke itinerary your adeo Travel Britain Expert will always select the pass that best suits your needs and offers best value for the journeys and timescale over which you will be travelling.

Britrail Passes - Conditions of Use

As the Britrail system is specifically designed for overseas visitors your Britrail Passes must have your names printed on them and are only valid when presented with a form of identification. You will have your passports with you on your vacation here in Britain but you should ensure that you always have them to hand (and not buried at the bottom of your suitcase) on board the trains in case the conductor asks to see them. Likewise, the names issued on your passes will be those that you submit on your booking confirmation form when confirming your vacation. Please ensure that you enter the names correctly and cross-check your passes against your passports once you receive them. It is always easier to re-issue tickets in advance than noticing once you are travelling.
